Review of VIA's Duality Chair by David Jankins
In writing this I take the 30,000 foot view, and my reputation which is based upon 17 yrs as Director of seating design for Steelcase, my royalty based design consulting business, jenkinsdesign over the past ten years, and my column for Monday Morning quarterback 'it’s about design'.
With VIA’s new Duality chair line, the concept is obvious. Unlike most of its competitors, Duality speaks loud and clear that it has an architectural presence, in contrast to many competitors who have focused on the exoskeletal framework, with mesh and thin covers.
Its design cues relate strongly to the International style of the mid fifties, such as Mies Vander Rohes Seagram building, clean unadorned and sleek. Mid century modern is at its peak today, and duality will fit nicely into interior designs that are based upon it.
Underpinning Frank Ghery's work, which would seem to be the antithesis of this clean style, lies tightly detailed international style work spaces, such as is found in the Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas, where the 'melted facade' strikes one as pure sculpture, yet just behind it is a tightly crafted international style clinic and research offices. Today’s clean office spaces with their bench workstations, and almost clinical look, are a fitting backdrop to Duality.
This lean and clean aesthetic relies upon a high attention to detail in the construction and tailoring. This has been achieved to the point where this chair has an affinity to the interiors of the Porsche Panamera, or the Audi A-7, both highly regarded design statements.
This line of seating exudes a premium quality. Both in the visuals and the ergonomics of performance.
VIA has obviously made the assessment that their offerings needed to become leaner, tighter, and more contemporary, while maintaining their heritage of comfort and support. They have achieved this in Duality, placing them among the best as legitimate contenders for corporate customers looking for appropriate style, character, and performance.
