Active Sitting: Move Your Ass - and Your Mind Will Follow

At Gecco Vision, we strongly believe in encouraging physical activity. Our philosophy - and its benefits - can be summed up in a simple motto: “Move your ass, and your mind will follow.”

The idea is straightforward: when the body stays engaged, the mind remains alert, focused, and energized. We’ve applied this approach across many of our active sitting projects.

Subtle Muscle Activation

We see active sitting in two main ways. The first is subtle muscle activation. Some chairs are intentionally designed to move, introducing gentle, continuous motion that activates the body’s micro-muscle structures, especially in the lower back and core. At first, this movement can feel unfamiliar or even slightly tiring - but that’s actually a sign of progress. It means dormant muscles are being reactivated and strengthened.

Supporting the body in a fixed position leads to an undesired outcome: muscles begin to degenerate. This is particularly true for the micro-muscle structures in the back, which play a critical role in maintaining a healthy, pain-free body. These muscles deteriorate during static sitting, and occasional gym workouts can’t compensate - they primarily target major muscle groups for short periods, rather than continuously engaging the micro-muscles throughout the day. When lateral and vertical movements are built into a chair’s design - as in Swopper and Muvman - these micro-muscle structures remain active while sitting.

Beyond muscular engagement, active sitting also supports better blood circulation, fascia activation, and healthy movement around cartilage, among other benefits. Designing for “perfect” static support is outdated and one of the reasons the phrase “sitting is the new smoking” has gained so much traction.

Playful Change of Posture

The second approach to active sitting focuses on playful encouragement of posture change. We’re big fans of the late Peter Opsvik’s quote: “The best posture is the next posture.” Chairs designed around this principle support multiple seating positions, making it easy and intuitive to shift posture throughout the day. Regular posture changes reduce fatigue, engage different muscle groups, and support long-term comfort and wellbeing.

An added benefit is versatility. These chairs adapt seamlessly across different environments - from desk work and collaboration to mobile device use and specialized settings. For example, our Sorta design is used in healthcare to help patients feel more comfortable during procedures such as blood tests. Other examples include Sorta and Werksy.

Final Thoughts

Active sitting isn’t about forcing movement - it’s about designing environments that naturally encourage it. By embedding motion, adaptability, and posture variety into everyday seating, we can support healthier bodies, sharper minds, and more sustainable work habits over the long term.
